Popping is a dance style that originated and began to develop in the mid-70s in Fresno, California. The main pioneer of this style is Boogaloo Sam, over time this style was formed by other dancers, but one of the most important dance crews was The Electric Boogaloos.
Popping movement is based on the so-called "pop" technique—a rapid contraction and relaxation of muscles designed to create an illusory effect at the end of each pose. Popping style also incorporates techniques such as Robot, Waving, Tutting, Gliding, Animation, Toyman, and others. While these styles once coexisted alongside popping, in the modern dance world they are distinguished as independent movement styles with their own branches of technique and concepts. Popping is typically performed to Funk, G-Funk, or electronic music characterized by popping rhythms; however, today the genre can even be danced to classical or pop music.
