DANCEHALL

Dancehall is not just a style of dance and music. It is a powerful culture, a form of self-expression, energy and movement of inner freedom, reflecting everyday life and social context. Born in the 1970s in the capital of Jamaica, Kingston, Dancehall style captivated with its distinctive rhythms, open, often provocative lyrics and confidence. Each dance move here reflects a lifestyle, household activities, environment or even a personality trait.

Each Dancehall movement has its own creator, meaning and history. It is important to know where and why certain movements came from – this is cultural respect. However, Dancehall is usually danced not “out of necessity”, but out of feeling. Everyone is welcome here: it doesn’t matter what you look like, how old you are, what your physical state is or how you feel – just dance and express yourself through movement! Understanding the context and a huge range of movements allows you not to just copy, but to create your own variations, explore your body, feel, release emotions and enjoy dancing.

Over time, Dancehall has grown and evolved from the Old School reggae vibes to today's TikTok trends, where variations of New School or Female moves dominate. Dancehall encompasses many styles that may seem like completely different dance styles, allowing you to delve deeper and discover what is closest to your body language:

  • Old School – the beginning, the roots. A minimal but full of character dance, often playing with the music through gestures and posture.
  • Middle School – more energetic, more physical with more footwork and dynamics.
  • New School / Badman Style – strong, masculine, conveying strength. It's all about attitude, power and groove.
  • Female / Dancehall Queen Style – feminine, provocative, but at the same time strong and independent. Hips, chest, shoulders are active as if every movement says: "I am here!"
  • Smooth / Flow – a gentle, undulating movement that flows through the entire body. Often used in choreography, this style reveals body awareness, musicality, and sensitivity.
